Summary

The King County Department of Local Services’ Road Services Division will install a temporary bridge just downstream from the historic Baring Bridge over the South Fork Skykomish River. The current bridge was damaged by recent storms and flooding, and access is limited.

Story

King County is taking swift action to restore reliable access and essential services for residents in northeast King County after historic storms and flooding damaged key transportation routes in December. To address urgent needs, the Road Services Division and Finance and Business Operations Division have expedited a construction contract to install a temporary bridge just downstream from the historic Baring Bridge. The bridge over the South Fork Skykomish River serves as the only access point for about 170 properties.

The Baring Bridge was significantly damaged during the storms. Road Services crews cleared built-up log debris and repaired some of the damage caused by several debris hits, but because of the extent of the damage they still had to restrict vehicles to those under 5 tons/10,000 pounds. This limits access for residents, utility crews, emergency services, and delivery of propane and supplies for septic systems. The temporary bridge will allow heavier vehicles to reach the community.

The county plans to install the temporary bridge in spring 2026. The contract is for about $3.5 million with the Johansen Construction Company of Sumner. King County is also prioritizing a future permanent replacement for the historic Baring Bridge, with design and planning underway.

King County will host a meeting for the Baring community before installing the temporary bridge.

Quote from Executive Girmay Zahilay:
“Our priority is ensuring that all residents have safe and reliable access to essential services. This temporary bridge is an important step toward recovery and resilience for one of the more remote communities in King County.”

Quote from Leon Richardson, Director of the Department of Local Services:
“We know how much this community depends on reliable transportation. By expediting this temporary bridge, we’re making sure residents and businesses can get the resources they need while we work on a lasting solution.”

Quote from Tricia Davis, Director of the Road Services Division:
“Our team is moving quickly to design and install a temporary structure that meets safety standards and restores access. This is a critical lifeline for the Baring community, and we’re committed to getting it done as soon as possible.”
